Every year on 7th April we celebrate World Health Day. Back in 1948, the World Health Organisation held the first World Health Assembly. That day also marked the creation of the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an agency of the United Nations. Unlike the UN which is located in New York, USA the WHO is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Just like the UN took over the mandate of League of Nations, the WHO took over the assets and duties of the League of Nations Health Organisation and the International Office of Public Hygiene. It began with the mandate of keeping the world safe and promoting good health.
What began as the first World Health Assembly is now a forum of 194 member countries which meet every year in May in Geneva at WHO HQs. This meeting decides lots of crucial matters of health policy as well ad deciding the major activities for the coming year and the budget.
World Health Day 2023 – Health for all
This April 7th, WHO celebrates its 75th birthday. This years theme is Health for all. WHO looks back at the public health success and quality improvement over the last 75 years. This year is also the opportunity to tackle the health challenges for the coming future.
Coming in the wake of the global pandemic due to COVID, it is only apt that this year the focus is on the general population. WHO looks back at the challenges faced by the world and together with science and technology looks to take on future challenges as they come. The focus in the future will be primary health care so that people all over the world attain high levels of health and wellbeing.
