If we exert a bit or we are running a flight of stairs, the energy demand of our body increases. The oxygen supply to the cells is not sufficient enough for the cells. Now we switch to the emergency system called glycolysis. This is the anaerobic way to create energy in the absence of oxygen. But this process is hardly efficient as it creates only 2 ATP units. But still this is the only system which is available in emergency. It helps us to run and escape from a dangerous situation. It gets us prepared to run if required.

Glycolysis is also the preferred method if there is too much of sugar in your blood. This happens with a carb and sugar rich diet. Too much of sugar is toxic for the body so it tries to get rid of it by forcing the cells to burn this glucose by the fastest way possible, that is glycolysis.

This the reason why your body is constantly burning sugar instead of fat. This is also the cause for disturbance of the metabolic balance of the body.
