Mentorship or self-motivation, which one works?

mentor

There are a lot of self motivated people out there and enough literature on self motivation to cover the equator ten times. So where does the need for a coach fit in. Between choosing a mentor or going it the own way, which is the right choice.

What is self motivation

It is a process of keeping yourself focused on achieving your goals. It takes care of the hardest part of keeping you going when you don’t feel like doing it. Self motivated employees are dream HR recruitment. If motivation comes from within, it is because of inner desire. Many things we do on daily basis and some big achievements in life are due to self motivation.

Let us take example of learning yoga online. During this lockdown people resorted to online classes but many also choose to learn yoga from YouTube videos. Perfect case of learning through self motivation. Most of the skills you learn are self motivated.

Why a mentor

All of us follow sports, and know the importance of a coach. Big ticket games have superstars playing but always need a coach for mentoring. The 1992 US Olympic Basketball team popularly known as the Dream Team had an undefeated run to the gold medal. The team is considered to be the best sports team assembled ever including players like Michael Jordan and was coached by Chuck Daly.

There are many situations in life when the need of a coach is imminent. If you are lucky to find a person who will mentor you free of cost, else you will need to pay for one.

The most common query posed to a consultant is that what is the benefit over learning from YouTube. Let’s go back to yoga. You can watch the steps on a YouTube channel and replicate them. But there will be no one to tell you if your posture is correct. Also there will be no encouragement from the other side to do more or do better. You will have to correct your own actions and keep pushing yourself. By hiring a mentor, you leave the hardest part of the subconscious work to your guru.

A coach will study your level and then make a plan for your goals. This is made possible by the countless hours of mentorship and studies that the consultant/coach has put in. It is that cost and plus the time that you are paying the fees for. A mentor is always by your side to encourage you to do more when you are exhausted or on the verge of giving up.

A big thanks to …

The age of social media and online interaction has given rise to a new kind of mentors. They take out time to help others achieving their goals. It takes a great deal of effort to help others especially when it comes to a cost of time.

These people are there for everyone to see. They are admins of WhatsApp & Facebook groups, mentors to students, organizers of free events & doing the unseen part of managing these online groups. Members approach them in case of problems. But no one turns back and thank them once for their efforts.
