Are onions good for health or dangerous for your body?

Onion or pyaaz is the most common food on the Indian menu. However many cultures also strongly advocate staying away from garlic and onions. So what should be your approach?

High sulphur content

Suphur is an important mineral for our body. It forms part of methionine which is an essential amino acid and cysteine which is a non essential amino acid. Essential amino acids are the ones which cannot be made by the body and hence has to form part of our diet. These two amino acids play an important role in protein synthesis associated with skin, tendons and ligaments.

Onions have anti-biotic properties

Ayurveda considers onion as a medicine which should be used only when you are not well. It is a powerful food which kills bacterial to cure your body of infections. But does that mean that it will kill the good bacteria which is in your gut.

The argument here in favour of onions is that once the good bacteria are killed, they will be replaced by newer bacteria which comes from various foods. So onion can be effectively used to renew bacteria in your digestive tract.

Food which generates heat

Onions are fiery foods which ignites certain passions in the body. As per ayurveda, the kapha body types might get away with eating raw onions. But for others it might contribute to acid reflux, heart burns, ulcers or inflammation in the digestion tract. It can also aggravate your intolerability and anger.

Remedies to offset the problem

Ayurveda promotes the consumption of sattvic food which contributes to mental clarity. Consumption of onions might hinder your spiritual endeavors. But eating in moderate amount might just work for you.

Also instead of consuming it raw, you can under cook or sauté it make them little milder.
